Christian Hospitality in the Piring Kasih Programme and the Promotion of Interfaith Harmony in Semarang

Abstract

This study aims to analyse Christian hospitality in the “Piring Kasih” service as a socio-religious practice that strengthens interreligious harmony at Santa Theresia Bongsari Church, Semarang City. This study is important because faith-based social service does not only function as humanitarian assistance, but can also become a space for interfaith encounter within a plural urban society. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach and a sociological perspective. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were then analysed through data reduction, data display, and inductive conclusion drawing. The findings show that “Piring Kasih” is not merely a free lunch service, but a practice of hospitality manifested through openness, non-discriminatory acceptance, empathy, a spirit of sharing, and a commitment to service. This practice strengthens harmony through internal church relations, interreligious interaction, and social service that respects human dignity. The implication of this study indicates that faith-based food service can serve as a practical model for building interfaith solidarity. The originality of this study lies in its explanation of Christian hospitality as a concrete social practice operating through food service and everyday human relations.
